Courses

Although the majority of technical security course offerings are vendor specific, and therefore only available through the product vendor or their business partners, there are several excellent sources for management, general, or vendor-neutral security courses. Some of the more familiar sources are:

Computer Security Institute
MIS Training Institute
SANS Institute

Note: The above is not intended to be a comprehensive list of sources, rather a sample list of some of the more familiar sources within the industry. Inclusion or exclusion of a source from the list does not imply endorsement or non-endorsement by either ISSA or ISSA Vancouver Chapter.

One unfortunate fact of life is that most of the courses, seminars and certification examinations of interest to our local members are not readily available in the Vancouver area. This often means it is prohibitive for individuals to attend a course of interest or value to them. As a service to chapter members and the local IT Security community, ISSA Vancouver can serve as a facilitator to encourage course providers to schedule presentations in the Vancouver area. For example, based on local interest, the Vancouver chapter has sponsored several sessions of the CISSP seminars and certification examinations, saving attendees the costs of traveling to other cities in North America.

If you are interested in having a course, seminar or certification examination brought to Vancouver, please contact the Member Services team at .

Professional Certifications

The Vancouver chapter of ISSA actively encourages professional certification within the security community. As part of ISSA, we are particularly active in promoting and supporting the CISSP and SSCP designations offered through (ISC)².

Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) is the premier, vendor-neutral certification for the security profession. The certification is based on a Common Body of Knowledge encompassing 10 domains of security and security management.

Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) is the premier, vendor-neutral certification for the security practitioners. It is more technical and "hands-on" oriented than the CISSP, but is also premised on the same Common Body of Knowledge as the CISSP.

Please contact James Crooks, of the Member Services team if you are interested in forming a study group, or for information on having the CISSP preparation course and certification examination brought to Vancouver.

Additional certifications that may be of interest to our members:

Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISM) are related certifications focused on the IT audit and governance, and is offered through ISACA. Please contact the ISACA Vancouver Chapter for further information on this designation.

Several specialized technical certifications are available through SANS Institute. These certifications usually require attendance at one or more class sessions, successful completion of an examination, and submission of a discussion paper.
